Jazz Age Lawn Party

JAZZ AGE LAWN PARTY is New York City’s original prohibition era inspired gathering. Hosted and conceived by Michael Arenella in 2005, the event started as a small gathering of perhaps fifty friends and fans. The event, initially produced by the island, was handed over to Michael in its third year to organize and grow. Under his watch, the event was carefully crafted and nurtured, becoming what is now referred to by The Wall Street Journal as, “the biggest (not to mention the cleanest and most family-oriented) regular event in the ‘Retro Noveau’ movement…” Consistently selected by The New York Times as one of the most memorable events of the year, JAZZ AGE LAWN PARTY offers the magical opportunity to travel back in time. Two weekends a year, guests are invited to immerse themselves in one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history. Date: August 25th and 26th, 11am – 5pm, Governor’s Island.

Famous New Yorkers Born In August: Herman Melville

Herman Melville was born in New York City on August 1st, 1819. He worked as a crew member on several sea vessels beginning in 1839, his experiences spawning his successful early novels Typee (1846) and Omoo(1847). Subsequent books, including his masterpiece Moby-Dick (1851), sold poorly, and by the 1860s Melville had turned to poetry. Following his death in New York City in 1891, he posthumously came to be regarded as one of the great American writers.
