Japan Day

The time has come for the annual NYC celebration of all things Japanese! Taking place on Sunday, May 12th at Central Park, the event will feature a 3 act stage program featuring Japanese music, art, poetry and Martial Art demonstrations as well as Activity Tents including everything from Photo Booths, Virtual Reality Experiences, Kabuki face painting as well as several other activities and food tents featuring all forms of Japanese cuisine! The event is free and will run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Please see your Concierge for additional details.

Memorial Day

The time has come to honor and pay tribute to the brave men and woman who have served this country. There will be several parades honoring the occasion with the biggest one taking place between Little Neck and Douglaston in Queens and Manhattan’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Day Observance taking place at Riverside Dr and 89th St with both beginning at 10:00 AM as well as several bars and venues having events for the occasion and 3 day weekend! Fleet Week

Tying into Memorial Day is the Annual Fleet Week celebration! Fleet Week in NYC is a seven-day celebration to honor the members of the United States Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. Every year, the weeklong bash starts with the Parade of Ships, a slew of visiting vessels and tall ships that cruise along the Hudson river and continues with military demonstrations, a Memorial Day ceremony and several other events to mark the occasion. Fleet Week runs from May 23rd to May 29th and will be taking place at the New York Harbor, Pier 92 in Manhattan, USS The Sullivans Pier in Staten Island, Military Island (Broadway and 7th Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets), Eisenhower Park, the Flagship Brewery and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument. Live Concerts

May is shaping up to be a great a month for live concerts! Madison Square Garden will be hosting the Piano Man himself- Billy Joel on May 9th, the legendary The Who on May 13th and Veteran Pop heavyweight Pink on May 22nd. Terminal 5 will be hosting Metalcore staples Killswitch Engage and Parkway Drive on May 9th and the very next day Lil Pump will be performing on May 10th. Rough Trade in Brooklyn will feature Indie Folk go-to Laura Stevenson performing on May 24th and Music Hall of Williamsburg will be welcoming Alt-Country veteran Son Volt on May 4th and Indie Rock Cult Icons Pedro The Lion on May 10th. New York Beerfest

Back at the Mets’ CitiField again this year is the annual Beerfest on May 4th! The stadium will be complete with food and more than 200 beers available from 80 different breweries during 2 three-hour sessions. Beerfest is a day all for the baseball fans and beer connoisseurs! The festivities start at Noon with tickets beginning at $50 for regular admission and $80 for VIP admission. Please see the website for tickets or your Concierge for more information.

Art Galleries

This May will be hosting breathtaking art installations all over Manhattan! The Whitney Museum will be hosting the Whitney Biennial which is a showing the best art of the past year from 75 artists and collectives starting on May 17th. Industry City will be hosting “Escher: The Exhibition & Experience” which is an expansive retrospect of M.C. Escher’s most revered work which concludes on May 26th. The Jewish Museum will be hosting “Leonard Cohen: A Crack In Everything” all month long which is an exhibition of the late songwriters life and influence through the work of 12 artists and 18 musicians from 10 countries. Frieze New York is back for another expansive year with displays on Randalls Island and Rockefeller Center which will feature work from galleries stretching across 26 countries which will be running from April 29th to May 5th. The Park Avenue Armory will be hosting TEFAF New York with its expansive collection of Modern and Contemporary art and design which will be running from May 3rd through May 7th. Local Lower East Side

Lower East Side is buzzing with local events and activities all month long! Virtual Reality go-to Jump Into The Light on Orchard St will be holding it’s Rollercoaster simulator on May 3rd and 4th and again on the 10th and 11th. Arlene’s Grocery on Stanton St will be posting a Prince Tribute show on May 12th. Black Cat LES on Rivington St will be holding Black Cat Comedy every Friday for the duration of the month featuring a wide array of touring comics. The Tenement Museum will be holding its “Muslim Life on the Lower East Side” retrospective exploring the history and diversity of the Muslim communities within the Lower East Side. Graff Tours

We’ve partnered with graffiti tour company Graff Tours to bring you a unique new way to experience the Lower East Side neighborhood and its vibrant street art scene. Sign up at our concierge desk for a tour, a graffiti lesson with a local artist, or both!

The 90 minute tour starts with a visit to Jean-Michel Basquiat's old studio and the old home of The CBGB Rock Venue, then winds through the Centre-fuge Art Project that is using the New York City Subway as its canvas and finishes where Keith Haring once stood underneath Manhattan's largest street art mural.

If you opt for the lesson, you’ll learn tips and techniques of aerosol art from an authentic NYC graffiti artist. This unique hands-on lesson allows you to create your own art project to take home at the end of the experience. Paint, canvas, and gloves are all provided.

Meeting Location: Meet at Think Coffee 1 Bleecker St. in Manhattan Northwest Corner of Bleecker St. and The Bowery . The tour ends where it begins.
